Florida Speeding Ticket Fines and Penalties

Speeding tickets are some of the most commonly-issued citations throughout Florida. While many speeding violations do not cause serious injury or contribute to challenges for other drivers on the road, the fines imposed on alleged violators make up a large portion of state funds.

Many drivers who are issued speeding tickets do not realize the extent of their options with regard to attending traffic school, or enlisting the support of an experienced Florida speeding ticket attorney who can aggressively defend your best interests in traffic court.

How Much Can You Go Over the Speed Limit?

Driving over the speed limit, in any zone, is illegal and subject to ticketing. Consequences for speeding vary, based on the speed and zone. Fines and point penalties are listed below:

Less than 5 MPH over the speed limit:

  • Usually given a warning, unless in a school zone or construction zone. If cited in a school zone, a driver going less than 5 MPH over the speed limit may face a fine of between $50 and $143 along with three points on their license.

6 MPH to 9 MPH over the speed limit:

  • Sometimes let off with a warning. A driver could face a fine of $118 to $151 and three points on their license.

10 MPH to 14 MPH over the speed limit:

  • Usually ticketed for speeding. A driver could face a fine of $193 to $226 and three points on their license.

15 MPH or more over the speed limit:

  • Almost always ticketed for speeding. A driver could face a fine of $243 to $376 and four points on their license.

You Have Options!

Aside from the many drivers who simply pay a full fine listed on a speeding citation, get points on their drivers' license and suffer the potential consequences, there are other ways to approach your case.

Is traffic school a good idea?

Traffic school may be an option, but this is quite costly. You must pay the ticket in full up front, along with affidavit fees, and the cost of the traffic school itself. Also, it can be time-consuming and certain restrictions apply. Remember, the higher the speed, the higher the fine.

If a law enforcement officer issues a citation for exceeding speeds less than 15 MPH over the posted speed, a 3-point addition to your license will occur. Those drivers who exceed 15 MPH over the posted speed can receive a 4-point addition.
